Lungs

Definition. The lungs are a pair of vital organs in the chest cavity that are responsible for exchanging oxygen from the air we breathe for carbon dioxide through the process of respiration.

  1. The lungs are divided into lobes, with the right lung having three lobes and the left lung having two lobes, each lobe being supplied by a lobe of the bronchi and a branch of the pulmonary artery.
  2. The process of breathing involves the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm and intercostal muscles, which increases and decreases the volume of the chest cavity, drawing air into the lungs through the trachea and bronchi, and expelling it back out through the same pathway.
  3. The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide occurs in the alveoli, small air sacs where the air we breathe comes into close contact with the blood, allowing for the diffusion of oxygen into the blood and the diffusion of carbon dioxide out of the blood and into the alveoli to be exhaled.
  4. The lungs also play a critical role in the regulation of acid-base balance in the body through the exhalation of carbon dioxide, a potential acid, and in the filtration of small blood clots and other foreign particles from the blood. 5. Homeopathic Point: The lungs, being an essential organ for respiration and overall health, are influenced by the vital force and susceptibility of an individual, making them prone to various diseases and conditions that can be treated through homeopathic principles that aim to restore the balance of the vital force and enhance the body's natural healing capabilities.
