Glands
1. Classify glands based on type of secretion
- Exocrine glands:
- Serous glands
- Mucous glands
- Mixed glands
- Endocrine glands:
- Glands that secrete hormones directly into the blood stream
2. Describe the microscopic structure of serous gland
Serous gland consists of:
- Glandular epithelial cells (acinus cells) with a central lumen
- Basal lamina
- Cilia (short)
- Tall columnar cells
- Apical portion bears microvilli
- Secretory granules are present in the apical portion
3. Describe the microscopic structure of mucous gland
Mucous gland consists of:
- Glandular epithelial cells (acinus cells) with a central lumen
- Basal lamina
- Cilia (long)
- Short columnar or cuboidal cells
- Apical portion bears mucous granules
- Mucous material is present in the lumen
4. Describe the microscopic structure of mixed gland
Mixed gland consists of:
- Glandular epithelial cells (acinus cells) with a central lumen
- Basal lamina
- Both short and long cilia present
- Both tall columnar and short columnar or cuboidal cells present
- Both secretory granules and mucous granules present
- Both serous and mucous materials are present in the lumen
