Face – Muscle, Nerve and Blood Vessels

Muscles of Facial Expression

  1. Orbicularis Oculi: surrounds the eye and closes the eyelids
  2. Procerus: raises the eyebrows and frowns
  3. Corrugator Superficialis: frowns and draws eyebrows together
  4. Zygomaticus Major: smiles and raises the corners of the mouth
  5. Zygomaticus Minor: raises the corners of the mouth
  6. Buccinator: compresses the cheek and helps in blowing
  7. Risorius: smiles and draws the corner of the mouth laterally
  8. Platysma: draws the skin of the neck and face downwards
  9. Levator Labii Superioris: raises the upper lip
  10. Levator Labii Superioris Alaeque Nasi: raises the upper lip and nasal alae
  11. Depressor Anguli Oris: depresses the angle of the mouth
  12. Depressor Labii Inferioris: depresses the lower lip
  13. Levator Anguli Oris: raises the angle of the mouth
  14. Orbicularis Oris: closes the mouth and purses the lips

Blood and Nerve Supply

Arterial Supply

  • Facial Artery: arises from the external carotid artery and supplies the face
  • Maxillary Artery: arises from the external carotid artery and supplies the mid-face
  • Mandibular Artery: arises from the external carotid artery and supplies the lower face

Venous Drainage

  • Facial Veins: drain into the external jugular vein and internal jugular vein

Nerve Supply

  • Facial Nerve: arises from the brainstem and supplies the muscles of facial expression
  • Trigeminal Nerve: supplies the skin and muscles of the face
  • Occulomotor Nerve: supplies the muscles of the eye

Applied Anatomy

Muscles of Facial Expression

  • Action Sequence: 1 → Orbicularis Oculi contracts to close the eyelids 1 → Procerus and Corrugator Superficialis contract to frown 1 → Zygomaticus Major and Zygomaticus Minor contract to smile 1 → Risorius contracts to draw the corner of the mouth laterally 1 → Platysma contracts to draw the skin of the neck and face downwards

Nerve and Blood Supply

  • Nerve Pathway: Brainstem → Facial Nerve → Muscles of Facial Expression
  • Blood Pathway: External Carotid Artery → Facial Artery → Face External Carotid Artery → Maxillary Artery → Mid-face External Carotid Artery → Mandibular Artery → Lower Face
