Synovial joint between talus and calcaneus

Location

Below ankle joint, between hindfoot bones

Articulating Surfaces

Talus (inferior surface)
Calcaneus (superior surface)
Covered with hyaline cartilage

Structure

Joint capsule surrounds talocalcaneal articulation
Lateral, medial, and posterior ligaments strengthen joint

Ligaments

Interosseous talocalcaneal ligament
Cervical ligament
Lateral and medial talocalcaneal ligaments

Nerve Supply

Tibial nerve โ†’ posterior
Deep peroneal nerve โ†’ anterior

Blood Supply

Posterior tibial artery
Peroneal artery

Movements

Inversion and eversion of foot
Helps adjust hindfoot on uneven surfaces
