Definition

Ball-and-socket type synovial joint between talus, calcaneus, and navicular

Location

Midfoot, medial side of foot

Articulating Surfaces

Head of talus with navicular and anterior calcaneus
Surfaces covered with hyaline cartilage

Structure

Joint capsule surrounds talonavicular and anterior calcaneal articulations
Spring ligament supports joint inferiorly

Ligaments

Plantar calcaneonavicular (spring) ligament
Dorsal talonavicular ligament
Bifurcate ligament

Nerve Supply

Tibial nerve โ†’ medial plantar branch
Deep peroneal nerve โ†’ dorsal aspect

Blood Supply

Dorsalis pedis artery
Posterior tibial artery

Movements

Inversion and eversion
Supports medial longitudinal arch during walking
