Definition

Joint between tibia and fibula

Location

Leg, near proximal or distal ends depending on the joint

Articulating Surfaces

Proximal: head of fibula with lateral condyle of tibia
Distal: fibular notch of tibia with distal fibula

Structure

Fibrous joint (syndesmosis)
Capsule with ligaments connecting tibia and fibula

Ligaments

Anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments
Interosseous membrane

Nerve Supply

Common peroneal nerve (proximal)
Deep peroneal nerve (distal)

Blood Supply

Anterior tibial artery
Fibular artery

Movements

Very slight gliding movements
Provides stability to ankle

Clinical Anatomy

High ankle sprain โ†’ injury to distal tibiofibular ligaments
Syndesmotic injury โ†’ affects ankle stability
