Anatomy of Breast (MSLV)
1. Define location & extent of breast
- The breast lies on the anterior surface of the thorax between the 2nd to 6th ribs, extending from the lateral border of the sternum to the medial margin of the axillary fold.
- It is divided into 4 quarters by the mid-clavicular line, the mid-axillary line, and the lateral border of the sternum.
2. Describe structure of breast
- The breast is composed of 15-20 mammary glands surrounded by fatty tissue and Cooper's ligaments.
- It is subdivided into 5-6 lobes, each consisting of glandular tissue, ducts, and a nipple.
3. Describe the relations, blood supply and nerve supply
- Relations:
- Anteriorly: Pectoralis major and minor muscles
- Posteriorly: Serratus anterior and latissimus dorsi muscles
- Medially: Sternal border and pectoralis major muscle
- Laterally: Axillary vessels and nerves
- Blood supply:
- Medial and lateral branches of the internal thoracic artery
- Lateral thoracic artery
- Intercostal arteries
- Nerve supply:
- Lateral and medial pectoral nerves
- Thoracodorsal nerve
- Long thoracic nerve
4. Explain the lymphatic drainage of breast
- Lymph from the breast drains into the axillary lymph nodes, then to the supraclavicular lymph nodes, and finally to the thoracic duct, which empties into the left jugular vein.
- Lymphatic drainage can be divided into:
- Afferent lymphatic vessels
- Efferent lymphatic vessels
- Lymph nodes
5. Describe applied anatomy of breast
- The breast is a complex organ with a rich blood supply and extensive lymphatic drainage.
- Knowledge of the breast's anatomy is essential for various medical procedures, including breast surgery and imaging techniques.

Applied Anatomy of Breast The applied anatomy of the breast is important for: -Breastfeeding: The nipple-areola complex is the site of milk production. - Breast surgery: The breast is divided into four quadrants: upper outer, upper inner, lower outer, and lower inner. - Breast cancer: The breast is a common site for cancer, and the lymphatic drainage is important for staging and treatment. if possible put all imp vreast image
