Leptospirosis
Definition Leptospirosis is an infectious disease caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. It is transmitted through contact with water, food, or soil contaminated with the urine of infected animals.
Causes / Etiology The disease is caused by bacteria of the genus Leptospira. These bacteria are found in the urine of infected animals, such as rats, mice, dogs, and cattle. Humans can contract the disease through contact with contaminated water, food, or soil.
Types or Classification There are two main types of Leptospirosis: 1) Leptospirosis Weil's disease: a more severe form that occurs when the bacteria enter the bloodstream and cause kidney failure. 2) Leptospirosis icterohaemorrhagica: a milder form that causes jaundice and kidney failure.
Pathology Step 1 β Step 2 β Step 3 Step 1: The bacteria enter the body through cuts or scratches on the skin or through mucous membranes. Step 2: The bacteria multiply in the body and cause inflammation in the kidneys and liver. Step 3: The bacteria can also enter the bloodstream and cause kidney failure, jaundice, and other complications.
Clinical Features General features: fever, headache, muscle aches, and vomiting. Specific features: jaundice, kidney failure, and bleeding in the lungs or brain.
Complications Acute complications: kidney failure, jaundice, bleeding in the lungs or brain, and meningitis. Chronic complications: kidney damage, liver damage, and arthritis.
Diagnosis / Investigations Routine tests: complete blood count, blood chemistry, and urinalysis. Special tests: Leptospira IgM and IgG antibodies, PCR (polymerase chain reaction), and culture of the bacteria from urine or blood samples.
Management General management: rest, hydration, and pain relief. Modern treatment: antibiotics such as penicillin and doxycycline. Dietary advice: avoid contaminated water and food, and follow a balanced diet to prevent dehydration.
