Pemphigus

It is a group of chronic skin diseases characterized by the formation of blisters.

Pemphigus is caused by autoantibodies [antibodies that attack the body's own tissues] against the proteins in the skin known as desmogleins, which are part of the 'glue' that holds skin cells together.

There are several types of pemphigus, including

  • Pemphigus vulgaris, the most common form, which affects the skin and mucous membranes,
  • Pemphigus foliaceus, which affects the skin and is more common in certain parts of the world,
  • Pemphigus erythematosus, a combination of pemphigus foliaceus and lupus erythematosus,
  • Pemphigus paraneoplastic, a rare form associated with cancer,
  • Pemphigus vegetans, a rare form characterized by blisters and vegetating lesions.

The pathology of pemphigus involves several steps: step 1 β†’ autoantibodies are produced against desmogleins, step 2 β†’ these autoantibodies bind to desmogleins on the surface of skin cells, step 3 β†’ this binding causes the skin cells to separate from each other, step 4 β†’ the separation of skin cells leads to the formation of blisters.

The clinical features of pemphigus include

  • general features such as blisters on the skin and mucous membranes,
  • specific features such as painful blisters in the mouth and on the skin,
  • the blisters can rupture, leaving open sores that can become infected.

The complications of pemphigus can be acute, such as

  • infection of the blisters,
  • or chronic, such as
  • scarring of the skin,
  • disfigurement.

The diagnosis of pemphigus involves

  • routine tests such as a skin biopsy,
  • special tests such as immunofluorescence microscopy to detect the presence of autoantibodies.

The management of pemphigus involves

  • general management such as wound care and prevention of infection,
  • modern treatment such as corticosteroids and other immunosuppressive medications,
  • dietary advice such as a healthy and balanced diet.

Some homeopathic remedies that may be used to treat pemphigus include
