Escherichia coli

Morphology of Escherichia coli:

  • Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium.
  • It has a single polar flagellum which aids in its motility.
  • The cell wall of E. coli consists of an outer membrane and a peptidoglycan layer.
  • It has a periplasmic space between the outer membrane and peptidoglycan layer.

Virulence Factors of Escherichia coli:

  • Adhesins: These are proteins that help E. coli adhere to the host cells and tissues.
  • Invasion: Some strains of E. coli can invade the epithelial cells of the intestinal tract.
  • Toxins: Certain strains of E. coli produce toxins, such as Shiga toxin, which can cause damage to the host cells.
  • Capsule: Some strains of E. coli produce a capsule that can help them evade the host's immune system.
  • Hemolysins: Some strains of E. coli produce hemolysins that can cause the lysis of red blood cells.

Pathogenicity of Escherichia coli:

  • E. coli can cause a range of diseases, from mild diarrhea to life-threatening infections.
  • The pathogenicity of E. coli depends on various factors, such as the strain, the site of infection, and the host's immune response.
  • E. coli can cause infections in various parts of the body, such as the urinary tract, the respiratory tract, and the bloodstream.

Clinical Syndromes Caused by Escherichia coli:

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): E. coli is a common cause of UTIs, particularly in women.
  • Pneumonia: E. coli can cause pneumonia, especially in people with weakened immune systems.
  • Meningitis: E. coli can cause meningitis, a serious infection of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.
  • Septicemia: E. coli can cause septicemia, a life-threatening condition where the bacteria enter the bloodstream.
  • Gastroenteritis: E. coli can cause gastroenteritis, a condition characterized by diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.

Laboratory Diagnosis of Escherichia coli:

  • Culture: E. coli can be cultured from various specimens, such as urine, stool, and blood.
  • Identification: E. coli can be identified using various tests, such as the Gram stain, biochemical tests, and molecular tests.
  • Antibiotic Sensitivity Testing: E. coli can be tested for antibiotic sensitivity using various methods, such as the disk diffusion test and the broth dilution test.

Memory Trick:

  • "E. coli is a sneaky bacteria, It can cause UTIs, pneumonia, and more, It can invade the host cells, And produce toxins to harm, So be careful, it's a pathogen, don't you know!"
