Dentigerous Cyst

  1. Definition: Dentigerous cyst is a type of odontogenic cyst that forms around the crown of an unerupted tooth.

Types of Dentigerous Cyst

  2. Complex Dentigerous Cyst: It is a rare type of dentigerous cyst that is characterized by the presence of a septum or a nodule.
  3. Dilated Odontogenic Cyst: It is a rare type of dentigerous cyst that is characterized by the presence of a dilated cystic space.

Causes of Dentigerous Cyst

  1. Impaction of Teeth: Impaction of teeth can lead to the formation of dentigerous cyst.
  2. Genetic Factors: Genetic factors can play a role in the formation of dentigerous cyst.
  3. Infection: Infection can lead to the formation of dentigerous cyst.

Clinical Features of Dentigerous Cyst

  1. Swelling: The most common clinical feature of dentigerous cyst is a swelling in the jaw.
  2. Pain: Pain is a common symptom of dentigerous cyst.
  3. Discoloration: The skin over the swelling may be discolored.
  4. Bad Odor: A bad odor may be present from the swelling.

Radiological Findings of Dentigerous Cyst

  1. Radiolucency: The radiograph may show a radiolucent area around the crown of the unerupted tooth.
  2. Well-defined Border: The border of the cyst is well-defined.
  3. Location: The cyst is usually located in the mandible.

Surgical Enucleation

  1. Step 1 โ†’ The patient is given general anesthesia.
  2. Step 2 โ†’ An incision is made in the skin over the swelling.
  3. Step 3 โ†’ The cyst is dissected from the surrounding tissue.
  4. Step 4 โ†’ The cyst is removed.
  5. Step 5 โ†’ The wound is closed.

Follow-up Protocol

  1. Immediate Follow-up: The patient is followed up immediately after the surgery.
  2. Regular Follow-up: The patient is followed up regularly for the next few weeks.
  3. Radiographs: Radiographs are taken to check for any recurrence of the cyst.
