Ocular Injuries

Types of Ocular Injuries

  • Traumatic cataract
  • Hyphema or hemorrhage into the anterior chamber
  • Retinal detachment
  • Traumatic glaucoma
  • Corneal abrasion or laceration

Chemical Burns of Eye

  • Definition: Chemical burns of the eye occur when a chemical substance comes into contact with the surface of the eye.
  • Causes: Chemical burns can be caused by exposure to caustic substances, such as acid or alkali.
  • Clinical Features:
    • Severe pain
    • Redness and inflammation of the eye
    • Blurred vision
    • Discharge from the eye
  • Investigations:
    • Slit-lamp examination
    • Ophthalmoscopy
    • Ultrasonography
  • Complications:
    • Blindness
    • Vision loss
    • Chronic pain
  • Management:
    • Immediate flushing of the eye with water
    • Antibiotic eye drops or ointment
    • Corticosteroid eye drops or ointment
    • Pain management
    • Monitoring for complications

Blunt Trauma to Eye

  • Definition: Blunt trauma to the eye occurs when the eye is subjected to a non-penetrating force, such as a blow to the head.
  • Causes: Blunt trauma can be caused by a variety of factors, including sports injuries, falls, or car accidents.
  • Clinical Features:
    • Severe pain
    • Redness and inflammation of the eye
    • Blurred vision
    • Discharge from the eye
  • Investigations:
    • Slit-lamp examination
    • Ophthalmoscopy
    • Ultrasonography
  • Complications:
    • Hyphema or hemorrhage into the anterior chamber

  • Complications:
    • Blindness
    • Vision loss
