Urethritis

Definition

Urethritis is an inflammation of the urethra, which can be caused by various factors including infection, trauma, or foreign bodies.

Types

  • Acute urethritis: a short-term inflammation of the urethra
  • Chronic urethritis: a long-term inflammation of the urethra
  • Idiopathic urethritis: inflammation of the urethra without a known cause
  • Posterior urethritis: inflammation of the posterior urethra

Aetiological Factors

  • Infections: bacterial, viral, or fungal infections
  • Trauma: physical injury to the urethra
  • Foreign bodies: introduction of foreign objects into the urethra
  • Irritants: exposure to chemicals or other irritants
  • Autoimmune disorders: conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus

Clinical Features

Common Symptoms

  • Pain or burning sensation while urinating (dysuria)
  • Frequent or urgent need to urinate (urinary frequency)
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Painful ejaculation (in men)

Additional Symptoms in Men

  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination (urinary hesitancy or retention)
  • Weak or interrupted urine stream
  • Painful or swollen testicles (epididymitis)

Additional Symptoms in Women

  • Pain or burning sensation in the vagina or vulva
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Painful or swollen cervix

Complications

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
