URETHRAL CATHETERIZATION
Indications of urethral catheterization
- Urinary retention in acute or chronic conditions
- Preoperative placement in patients undergoing urological or abdominal surgery
- Postoperative care for patients who are unable to void
- Neurogenic bladder or spinal cord injuries
- Obstruction due to urethral stricture or prostate enlargement
- Severe trauma or pelvic fracture
- In cases of urinary incontinence
Technique of urethral catheterization
- Preparation: clean the meatus with soap and water, then disinfect with antiseptic solution
- Step 1 β Step 2: insert the catheter slowly into the urethra, advancing it until resistance is met
- Step 2 β Step 3: confirm the catheter is in the bladder by aspirating urine
- Secure the catheter with a sterile dressing and a catheter stabilization device
Foleyβs catheter
- A type of indwelling catheter consisting of a balloon at the tip which is inflated with sterile water to secure the catheter in the bladder
- Sizes: 12-24 French (16-20 are most commonly used)
- Clinical uses:
- Short-term management of urinary retention
